Two fine military works in Spanish for the Spanish army, printed in Brussels, by then the capital of the Spanish (Southern) Netherlands, recently reconquered for the Spanish king, marking the definite  separation between the Catholic Southern and the Protestant Northern Netherlands.
Ad 1: Military work on tactics, fortification, artillery, etc., originally published anonymously at Alcala in 1536. The present, second edition is the first to quote the name of the author: Diego de Salazar  (in the title of the second book, lf. 20). Salazar was inspired by Machiavelli's work: Arte della Guerra. On the folding plates several  tactical fighting positions are depicted for the army.
Ad 2: First edition, although Palau quotes Nicolas Antonio la Primera saying that the first edition is from 1587, also printed by R. Velpius, but Palau has never seen a copy of that edition. At least three re-editions appeared with Velpius in the following decade.

Fine copy in beautifully gilt binding.- (Spine sl. discoloured;  some quires sl. browned; sl. damp-stained; small hole in leaf 59).
Ad 1: Palau 286504; Peeters-Fontainas 1157; Machiels S 57; Bibl. de Salvá 2669; cf. Cockle 511 (ed. 1536); STC Spanish, p. 173 (ed. 1536); not in Adams. Ad 2: Palau 139748; STC Spanish, p. 209 (listed under Valdés); Cockle 563; not in Peeters-Fontainas.
