Rare treatise on a special medicament against various kinds of poisons by Angelicus Sala (1576-1637), an Italian chemist and Paracelsist doctor, who seems to have belonged to the circle of Michael Maier in The Hague. It is the first book of Sala which was published by the Leyden publisher Govert Basson. Bögels states (in error?) that it is "a reprint of two earlier Geneva editions", but we couldn't trace any copies of these editions. Sala dedicated the book to Prince Christian of Anhalt, the chief adviser to the Palatine court (pp. (3-4), dated The Hague, 20 November 1615. The dedication is followed by laudatory poems by Ewalt Schrevelius, Aegidius Oudensteyn, Clemens a Overschie, and Isaac Chabanaeus (pp. (5-14)).
In ca. 1610 Sala became personal physician to a cousin of William of Orange, Count Johann Ludwig von Nassau, whom he followed in the Protestant camp in the Upper Palatinate. In 1612 he settled in The Hague, where he worked as a doctor and taught German, French, English and chemistry. Sala's experiments with silver salts, moreover, laid the foundations for the development of the photographic process.
