Paris, François l'Anglois, dit Chartres, 1645. 12mo. 19th century calf, spine gilt with red title-label, red mottled edges. With engraved frontispiece showing all the elements and instruments of horlogiography, and numerous mathematical and geometrical tables, illustrations and figures on 76 numbered engraved plates, 2 folding, and with 11 repeats, incl. a cancel. (20), 391, (1 blank) pp.

Second, corrected and enlarged edition of an extensive text book on measurements, proportions and perspective, including the calculation of the time both by day and by night, of the time of the tides, etc., and to cut either in stone or in wood regular geometrical bodies, like a cube and a cylindre, or other polygons. Everything to do with measurement and projection is methodically taught in numerous "propositions", and clearly explained on the engraved plates, several of which were used again to explain a second and even a third problem.
Re-used were the plates numbered 13, 25, 26, 34, 41, 44, 45, and 60. Plate 19 was re-used too, mounted over a cancelled repeat of plate 20, and plates 26 and 41 were re-used twice. Plate number 33 was unintentionally  skipped, mentioned but not present. Nothing further could be found on the author. The book must have been at the time a very popular school book, Houzeau-Lancaster listing seven editions between the first of  1641 and 1701, but today the book seems to be very rare, not found included in the great collections, like the Honeyman Collection or the Wheeler Gift.

Good copy, with old owner's ms. entry: Caroli Adri. Le Forestier on title, and with the bookplate of Raoul Xavier.- (Binding rubbed, top of spine sl. dam.; some old ms. corrections in text).
