(22), 768 pp.

Rare first edition of this important artillery manual, especially on gunnery and the use of the canon, translated by Augustin Branden. The work, originally supposed to be published in French, is said to have been written by Antoine de Saint-Julien. Jähns, however, considers Branden to be the author; according to him the fake name of Saint-Julien is added, probably because a French name would benefit the popularity of the book.

Good copy with pasted ex-libris of Hoffmann on blank recto of title.- (Lacks last blank leaf of preliminary pages; sm. tear in one plate.).
Jähns II, pp. 1611-2 ('Denn der 'Chev. de Saint-Julien' ist weiter nichts als eine Brands Buch ausgeklebte modische Etikette'); not in Jordan, nor Gilhofer, Militaria, Thimm or Lipperheide.
