Strasburgh (i.e. Amsterdam), (By the successors of Giles Thorp), 1628. Small 4to. 19th century three quarter calf with marbled boards, gilt title on spine. Woodcut head-piece on title-page ruled in red, some larger and smaller woodcut initials. 27 lvs. (last blank lacking).

Rare controversial puritan satire in verses, to all probability by John Russell (d. 1688), but also attributed to John Rhodes, minister of Enborne, and John Robinson (1575?-1625). Russell placed the vice of anti-Calvinism faction in the Church of England next in line with the Spanish conspiracies. In the manner of John Donne's Ignatius his Conclave, Russell describes a conclave in Hell which reveals that Arminius was sent as a missionary from Hell to establish popery by the back door while seeming to be a Protestant.
The Dutch Reformed theologian Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609), served from 1603 as professor in theology at the University of Leiden. He wrote many books and treatises on theology and is known for his opposition to Calvinism. He has arguably become best known as the founder of the anti-Calvinistic school in Reformed Protestant theology.
Taking as his motto (printed on the title) the Juvenalian 'Possibile est Satyras non scribere?' (Is it possible not to write satires?), Russell explains that conditions are such that he is forced to write in verse. The poem has been forbidden in England during many years.
Fair copy with the large engraved ex-libris of Fairfax of Cameron.- (First 6 lvs. with corner and marginal restorations, small tear left corner of title-page, some foxing, lacking the very rare folding frontispiece (as most copies!)).
