First edition of Rulaeus' first attack (G. Brandts Stoute geveynstheyt...(1675)) on the second volume of Gerardt Brandt's famous Historie der Reformatie (1674), here published together with the first edition of his second attack (G. Brandts Liefedeloose geest ... (1676)) with the extra title-page mentioning both attacks.
Geraerdt Brandt (1626-1685) was a Dutch preacher, playwright, poet, church historian, biographer and naval historian. A well-known writer in his own time, his works include, apart from his famous Historie der Reformatie (vol. 1: 1668; vol. 2: 1674), Het Leven en bedryf van den Heere Michiel de Ruiter (1687) - an important source on the admiral's life, and a Historie der vermaerde zee- en koopstadt Enkhuisen (1666) - still an important source for that city's early history). Under the influence of professor Caspar Barlaeus, and his wife, Barlaeus's daughter in particular, Brandt gave up studying watchmaking and in 1652 passed his exam, becoming a Remonstrant preacher in Nieuwkoop. Brandt worked from 1660 to 1667 in Hoorn, before moving to Amsterdam.
In contrast to the Amsterdam Remonstrant minister Brandt, his colleague Henricus Rulaeus (Ruyl; 1611-1680) was a rigid and uncompromising orthodox minister (since 1640 in Amsterdam) who wasn't pleased with especially the second volume of Brandt's authoritative History of the Reformation in the Netherlands, which was, according to Rulaeus, too much in favour of Arminius and his followers.
Brandt in his turn defended himself against both attacks in his Verantwoording, ter sake van sijne Historie der Reformatie, tegens de beschuldigingen van D. Henricus Rulaeus (Amsterdam 1676; Knuttel 11479); Rulaeus reaction soon followed as Verded(ig)inge van de waerheydt sijner beschuldigingen, tegen de Historie der reformatie van Geraerd Brandt (Amsterdam, J. van Someren, 1676; Knuttel 11480).
