With autograph dedication by the creator of the 'French Cantate'
ROUSSEAU, Jean Baptiste.Odes sacrées. Détachées du corps de ses ouvrages. ![]() ![]() ![]() Brussels. Gilles Stryckwant, 1738. 4to. Contemporary marbled calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt, gilt binding edges, red marbled edges. With woodcut coat of arms of Marie Elisabeth of Austria on title. (6), 109, (1 blank) pp. First edition of a selection of sacred songs, taken from the Psalms, and chosen out of his own works by Jean Baptiste Rousseau (1671-1741). Born in Paris and with a promising career ahead of him, as he was already well known for his lyrics, Rousseau had to go in exile for reasons still unclear. He then lived in Brussels where he died in poverty, in spite of the fact that his poetry was much published and his lyrics much in demand with musicians, including Bernier, Morin, and Stück. Only after his death his fame was recognized, and he was honoured as the creator of the 'French cantate'. He still is judged the best French lyric of the period, and to distinguish him from Jean-Jacques, he was called 'le grand Rousseau' (sic!). His lyrics were used by French composers all through the eighteenth and nineteenth century and his poetry was much republished, thus giving the works of this rather unhappy poet a lasting musical life. The book is dedicated to 'Son Altesse Serenissime', Marie Elisabeth of Austria, Lady governor of the Austrian Netherlands, now Belgium. Fine copy, with autograph dedication by the author to l'Abbé Cochard on top of first blank.
This title not in Tchemerzine, or Cioranescu; see also: Sainte-Beuve, Portraits Littéraires I, p. 178-203; Henry A. Grubbs, J.B. Rousseau, his life and works.
