First edition of the collected poems of one of the best Dutch poets at the turn of the Seventeenth century

Pool; armorial head-piece with the coat of arms of the dedicatee Joan Baron van Welderen; 45 engraved text illustrations in cartouches (ca. 55 a 115 mm) for the 'Zedelessen uit de oude Verdichtzelen' (pp. 1-132) by J. Folkema, 2 engraved tail-pieces by Schijnvoet for the tragedies 'Eneas & Turnus' and 'Scilla', and 2 full-page engraved plates for the 'Boerekermis' (pp. 633-80); woodcut initials and tail-pieces. 14, (62), 680 pp. First edition of the collected poems by one of the most well-known Dutch poets at the turn of the seventeenth century Lukas Rotgans (1653-1710). There are two issues of this edition, another with a slip of paper pasted on the imprint: 'sold by J. Oosterwijk, Amsterdam'. A second edition appeared in 1735. The work is dedicated to Joan Baron van Welderen, member of the States General on behalf od Gelderland by Rotgans' brother-in-law A.H. de Salengre Jun. (pp. 3-14), followed by the preface by the publisher F. Halma to the reader, dated Leeuwarden, 15 Sept. 1714 including a biography of the author (pp. (1-43)), epitaphs for Rotgans by F. Halma, D. Smout, Joh. Schröder, A.H. de Salengre Jun. and H. van den Burg (pp. (44-54)), laudatory poems by H. van den Berg and F. Halma (pp. (55-58)), and contents (pp. (59-62)). The text contains Rotgans' poems, including his 'Zedelessen uit de Oude verdichtzelen' (pp. 1-132), Mengeldichten (pp. 133-184), Landtgedichten en Eergedichten' (pp. 251-78), 'Huwelyszangen' (pp. 327-90), 'Lykzangen", including epitaphs for Joan. Georg. Graevius, Joan Huydekoper (pp. 391-450), his famous tragedies 'Eneas en Turnus' (pp. 451-538), and 'Scilla' (pp. 539-632), and 'Boerekermis (pp. 633-80). Good copy with the bookplate of H.J. de Soeten.
