Beautiful Bodoni imprint; important for Hebrew typography
DE ROSSI, Giovanni Bernado (or Johannes Bernardus).Della vana aspettazione degli Ebrei del loro Re Messia dal compimento di tutte le epoche. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Parma, Dalla Stamperia Reale, 1773. Sm. 4to. Contemporary full sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments, one withy gilt title; last compartment with gilt B, single blind-tooled fillet border on both sides, blind-tooled board-edges, red painted edges. Woodcut head-pieces, the dedication to 'Vittorio Amedeo III, re di Sardegna' printed with calligraphic type. (8), XV, 244 pp. Nicely executed Bodoni imprint of a largely linguistic treatise on the Jewish belief on the return of the Messiah before the end of time by De Rossi (1742 - 1813), a renowned Oriental linguist in 18th century Italy. He received his doctorate in theology in 1766, the same year he was ordained. He continued studying - not only oriental languages, but also the modern European idioms. In 1769 he was offered the chair of Oriental languages in Parma, which he held until 1821. De Rossi sold his own exceptional collection of Jewish manuscripts and incunabula to the Archduchess Marie-Louise in 1816 for 100,000 francs, a staggering amount for that time. In the Della vana aspettazione treatise De-Rossi explores biblical prophesies and the Jewish interpretations of them - particularly dealing with the linguistic aspects of interpretation. BodonĂ's beautiful typography is especially evident in the dedication, but also throughout the treatise in the Hebraic script. De-Rossi continued to write books working closely together with Bodoni, many exploring Hebrew typography and linguistics. Very good copy.- (Some very slight foxing throughout).
