Paris, Imprimerie Nationale, 1883. 8vo. Contemporary three-quarters black morocco, spine ribbed, with two green morocco title labels, original wrappers preserved. With printer's device on title. XXIV, 359, (1) pp.

First and only edition of this catalogue of the Japanese library of the famous Swedish navigator A. E. Nordenskiöld (1832-1901). Nordenskiöld gained his worldwide fame as a result of his ten expeditions to the Arctic. After his voyage with the S. S. Vega, a Swedish polar expedition that after extensively having explorated the Arctic stopped for two months in Japan, Nordenskiöld concentrated on the study and systematic acquisition of geographic and cartographic literature. He spent the royalties of his large expedition account on books and maps and used works of his private collection as exchange material.
His large library (400 shelf meters) is now housed in the Helsinki University Library. The Japanese part of it is described in this catalogue, which contains almost a thousand items. The preface is written by Marquis D'Hervey de Saint-Denys, and the work is concluded by two indexes, one in Japanese characters and one in the Roman alphabet. The collection has played an important role in the spread of knowledge of Japanese culture in Europe in the 18th century.

Good copy.- (Many library stamps on titles; some modern underlinings and annotations; back wrapper badly repaired).
Cordier, Japonica, 535; not in Chadenat.
