Spectacular binding with heightened embroidered arms of the marquis and marchioness de Verneuil on front cover

ROQUES, Pierre.

Basle, Jean Brandmuller, 1731. 4to. Contemporary vellum with a large embroidered coat-of-arms pasted on front cover, red painted edges. Engraved frontispiece with a portrait of the author by F.A. Störcklein. (24), 596, 70, (2) pp.

Original and only edition of the main work by French Protestant minister in Basel Pierre Roques (1685-1748). This work is a defence of a 'true pietism', i.e. a rational and tolerant form of piety, against liberalism on the one hand and enthusiasm on the other. It has been translated into German in 1748.

The book is bound in a very significant and spectacular armorial binding: mounted on the vellum of the front cover is a large heightened embroidered double coat-of-arms in a cartouche (of ca. 10 mm. thick). The arms are of Eusèbe-Jacques Chaspoux, marquis de Verneuil (1695-1747) and his wife Louise Françoise Bigres (d. shortly after 1747), the  marchioness de Verneuil. Chaspoux de Verneuil was a high ranking courtier: the 'doyen des sécretaires de la chambre du Roi et introducteur des ambassadeurs'. His castle is in Verneuil-sur-Indre (Dept. Indre et Loire, arrond. Loches) and still exists. His coat-of-arms: a golden pelican with its two chicks on an azure fond with three golden crescents on a red fond; the other arms: a lion against a golden fence with three roosters against azure on top. Both arms in a roundel (ca. 83 x 52 mm) sewn in a cartouche (170 x 160 mm) embroidered with silver and gold threat.

Good copy.- (Some faults in the embroidered coat-of-arms; some gold threats of the background in the cartouche loose; some lacking).
