A rare romance of chivalry from the Spanish Golden Age, translated into Italian
Contemporary limp vellum with title in ink and pasted library label on spine, remnants of ties. Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut headpiece and initials. (12), 298 lvs. (the last 2 lvs.: colophon (verso blank) and last blank leaf missing). Vey rare first (and only?) edition of the Italian translation by Camillo Camilli (d. 1615) of the first part (running title through the entire book: 'Fatti di Felicemagno - Parte prima') of this originally Spanish romance of chivalry, generally known as the Félix Magno. As one can derive from the prologue in the original Spanish edition this work was written by someone in the service of viceroy D. Fadrique de Portugal. The colophon on the last, unsigned, leaf which is not present here, reads: 'In Verona, Appresso Sebastiano dalle Donne, 1586'. The first Spanish edition was printed in Barcelona at Carlos Amorós in 1531 under the title Los cuatro libros del valerosisimo caballero Félix Magno. The work apparently was very popular because it has been reprinted in 1543 and 1549 (4 parts in 2 vols) by Sebastián Trujillo in Sevilla. The romance deals with the life and history of Félix Magno, the son of King Falángriz of Great Britain and Queen Clarinea. A large part of the work is dedicated to the struggles with the Moors and Turks. As with virtually all of the famous Spanish romances of chivalry, ours was quickly translated into Italian, and as with other translations of romances the book is rare. Romances of chivalry seem to have been read to death, not matter the language. And similarly with other romances from the Spanish Golden Age, this work is receiving a rebirth of scholarly interest. Good copy with Ms. ownership's entries in ink on inside of front cover: 'Ioseph von Laszberg 1847' and 'Butsch', and a price: 'i flor.'.- (Vellum binding sl. shrunken and wrinkled, a small hole in each cover).
STC Italian p. 245; Palau 87526.
