Engraved title and 44 engraved plates of ca. 230 x 330mm. with calligraphed texts and images, including a portrait of Roelands. Very rare first and only edition of this famous Dutch writing master's book by David Roelands (born in Antwerp in 1572). Roelands came to Zeeland as a 'French Schoolmaster', first teaching in Goes and from ca. 1613 on in Vlissingen (Flushing). He became famous as a writing master and calligrapher.

The writing master's book belongs undoubtedly to the most impressive calligraphic works produced in The Netherlands in the seventeenth century. The plates are engraved by the famous engraver Simon Wynouts Frisius (Simon de Vries; ca. 1580-1629), who also engraved the plates for Jan van den Velde's Spieghel der Schrijfkonste (1605). The portrait of Roelands, however, is engraved by François Schillemans (Scehelemans; ca. 1575-after 1620). The calligraphical texts above and left and right are by Frisius. The texts of the plates are calligraphed in many different scripts with abundant marginal penwork in the form of animals, birds, persons, ships, etc.

Our copy is from the famous Meulman collection and is one of the few complete copies known.
