(14), 1-54, (1, 1 blank), 55-237 pp. Rare romanticized life of the Scottish Capucin friar George Leslie (d. 1637), known as 'Father Archangel'', written by the Italian archbishop of Fermi Giovanno Battista Rinuccini, originally published with the title Il Cappucino Scozzese. Rinuccini's biography passed through many Italian editions and was translated into French, Spanish, Latin, Dutch, German and Portuguese. Our edition of the Portuguese text has been translated by Christovao de Almeida who is mentioned on the title of the second part. Christovao de Almeida (1620-79) was a Heremite of Saint Augustin, and holder of a number of high Church offices at Lisbon in Portugal and publisher of some books of sermons. Giovanni Battista Rinuccini was born into a Florentine patrician family in September 1592. He was educated by Jesuits in Rome then studied canon and civil law at the universities of Bolognia, Perugia and Pisa. After embarking upon a promising career as an advocate in the ecclesiastical courts, Rinuccini's uncle Cardinal Bandini recommended him for the vacant archdiocese of Fermo. Rinuccini was ordained a priest and received a special dispensation to become Archbishop of Fermo in November 1625. He was deeply committed to the people of Fermo and declined the offer of the more prestigious archdiocese of Florence in 1631.He is best known for his time as Papal Nuncio to Ireland during the time of conflict known as the Irish Confederate Wars (1645-49) during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Rinuccini also wrote a number of books including works on philosophy, rhetoric, history and geography. Although he regarded his religious writings as his most important works, Rinuccini's most popular book, however, was his Il Cappuccino Scozzese, this romanticised life of the Scottish friar George Leslie. The dedication to Dom. Mascarenhas is signed by Joseph da Cruz Cardozo, a bookseller and publisher at Lisbon. In the preface he states that the first part is a summary of an earlier translation into Portuguese (1657) by Gomes Carneiro (1618-1676), and that the second part was compiled from the French translation by Francisco Barravult (Le Capucin ecossois, histoire merveillieuse et très véritable arrivée de nostre temps). Of special interest is the beautiful early 18th-century Portuguese binding, inspired by the 16th-century Lyon bindings à la fanfare. Good copy in a very fine binding.- (Spine dam., upper margin cut short, piece of right margin of title cut out (not affecting woodcut), probably because the presence of a library stamp; ms. annotations and pasted library label on first blanks).
