Tweede druk. Gron., J. Oomkens, 1828. Sm.8vo. Orig. printed blue wrappers. With woodcut illustration on title showing a small  boy reading in front of a teacher with a cane under his arm, and 8 almost full-page woodcuts in text, the first 5 coloured by a child's hand. 92 pp.

Nicely illustrated school reading-book, the fourth in the series "Natuurlijke Lees - Leerwijze", published by Roelf Gerrit Rijkens (1795-1855), schoolteacher at Zwolle. In his preface the author protests against the new term "sound-method" as contrasted with the old "spelling-method". His method is based on that used by Niewold, Heyningen Bosch, Prinsen, Anslijn, etc., but he rather calls it "natural reading - teaching method". The book is divided into 24 lessons, containing short stories, dialogues, riddles, proverbs, songs and poems, printed in various type, and is lively illustrated with popular woodcuts.

Good, but used copy.- (Spine mounted over; library stamps on title; sl. thumbed; dog-eared).
Waller 1471 (1st ed. of 1824); not in NUC.
