Eyewitness account of the second siege of Bergen op Zoom (1622)
![]() ![]() ![]() Middelburg, Jean vander Hellen for Rombout van Hamerste, Bergen op Zoom, 1623. 4to. Nineteenth-century red morocco, gilt ruling with four corner pieces on both sides, spine gilt in compartments and lettered in gold, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e. Woodcut vignette on title, woodcut initials. (16), 281, (11) pp. Very rare first French edition of a historical work on the second siege of Bergen op Zoom in 1622 during the Eighty Years war, described by three eyewitnesses, the minsters of the town: Lambertus de Rycke (1575-1658), Nathan Vayus ( 1581-1615) and Job du Rieu (1578-1627). The STCN and CC only mention three copies (Tilburg-UB, The Hague-RL and London-BL). The city was besieged by the Spanish Marquis Ambrosio Spinola from 18 July until 30 October 1622. The siege was ended by Prince Maurits of Orange. In 1623 the original Dutch edition appeared with the same imprint. After the title with the 'Octroy' on its verso, dated Middelburg, 14 Septerber 1623, follow the dedication to the States General and Prince Maurits, signed by the three ministers on p. (3-6), and the 10 laudatory poems by A. Hofferus, 'J.D.R.', Lud. à Kinschot, and Abraham Merius. The text is on p. 1-281, followed by lists of names of the protagonists during the siege, including the magistrate of Bergen op Zoom and the commanding officers of both armies (p. (1-10). The last page contains the errata. In 1867 Charles L.A. Campan has edited a new edition of the French text with an extensive introduction and notes. Very fine copy.
Barbier I, p. 400; de Wind, Ned. geschiedschrijvers I, p. 377 (Dutch edition); Nijhoff, Catalogus Ned. Plaatsbeschrijvingen en plaatselijke geschiedenis, 4956 (Dutch edition); Bodel Nijenhuis 561; STCN and CC: only three copies.
