First edition of a numismatic work by the French art historian Marcel Jerôme Rigollot (1786-1855) and Jean Michel Constant Leber (1780-1859). The authors especially describe the lead coins issued for the Feast of Fools (La Fête des Innocents ou des Fous or Narrenfest). During these yearly festivities, which were held in France and Belgium, a fake bishop was elected who was depicted on the coins together with riddles, rebuses, fools & jesters. The work is also important for the history of emblems and rebuses in the Middle Ages.

Dedication copy by the author to the 'Ministre de l'instruction publique' of France during the 'Monarchie de Juillet', Narcisse-Achile de Salvandy, who was Minister from 15 April 1837 till 31 March 1839.

Good copy.- (Some foxing throughout).
