A nickel for the rights of men

[RIGHTS OF MEN].

Orig. printed wrappers. (16) pp., incl. wrappers.

Extremely rare chapbook edition of the Dutch "Rights of Man and Citizen", decreed by the Provisional Representatives of the Dutch People in the first year of the Batavian Republic, 1795. The rights are described in nineteen sub-titles, numbered I to XIX. They garantee people's freedom in various ways, including freedom of speech and freedom of the press, as well as people's right to vote and be voted for, because "sovereignty rests with the whole people", as is stated in number XVIII.
These rights were probably based on the French "Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen" of 1793, which went much farther than the first "Déclaration des droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen" of 1789, as well as the later restricted "Déclaration" of An III. In France the "Rights" of 1793 were never put into practice, neither probably in the Netherlands. The title on front cover reads: "De Rechten van den Mensch en van den Burger", and on back cover is announced: "Alömme a een halve stuiver." (Everywhere for a nickel).
The size of the little chapbook is ca. 5.8 x 9.4 cm.

Good copy.
The Koninklijke Bibliotheek at The Hague lists one copy.
