Mysterious Arabs

RICHARD, Charles.
Les mystères du peuple Arabe.

Paris, Challamel Ainé, 1860. 12mo. Contemporary half citron morocco, spine ribbed in 6 compartments, one with blue morocco title-label and 5 with gilt emblems of the Ottoman Empire, the crescent moon with the star, gilt upper edges (R. PETIT). XXIV (last blank), 242 pp.

First edition of a work which in an interesting way tells about the Arabian customs and ways of thinking about politics, war, oppression, freedom etc. The author, formerChef des affaires Arabes Charles Richard, has chosen a special setting for his essay. He situates it on an Algerian market. After extensively describing the surroundings, the market, the colours etc. he lets several characters come to the scene of action and in the dialogues between them the different ideas and opinions about the various issues become clear.
In a nice binding by R. Petit with the skilfully tooled ornaments on the spine together with the alternate setting and perspectives in the account, make this an interesting copy.

Beautiful copy.- (Some foxing).
Not in Gay; not in Chadenat.
