Amsterdam, A. B. Saakes, 1746. 4to. Contemporary half red roan with marbled boards, gilt spine (rebacked). Double page frontispiece with title ('De Rhijn-stroom') and view of the source of the river Rhine and the pierced rock near Basel, engraved by A.B. Saakes, large folding map of the river basin of the Rhine from its source in Switserland to the Dutch coast (645x395mm): 'Nieuwe kaart van de rivier de Ryn ... Amsterdam, A.B. Saakes 1797' engraved by C. van Baarsel, and coloured in outlines, 13 double page and 20 half-page views on 10 leaves with views on the Rhine. 58 pp. Rare second enlarged and best edition of this description of the course of the river the Rhine and the river's basin from its sources in Switzerland to the Dutch coast. The also rare first edition was published in 1794 with only 21 plates. The lively and informative description of all the towns and regions along the river from Switzerland to Nijmegen closes with a long poem on the Rhine by Arend Fokke Simonsz. (1755-1812) on pp. 53-8, reason why the book is sometimes ascribed to Fokke Simonsz. The poem is perhaps part of his Boertige reis door Europa. 7 vols. (The Hague, 1794-1806). Of the 33 numbered views by various engravers, only 2 are signed: one by J. Wijsman (d. 1828) and one by the female artist Anna Catharine Brouwer. The views follow the course of the Rhine, beginning with Chur, Schaffhausen and Basel in Switzerland, then Strasbourg, the castle at Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Mainz, Bingen, etc. till Cleve, Emmerik, Nymegen and Arnhem in the Netherlands. The double-page views include views on Braubach, Andernach, Bonn (4), Siebengebirge and Königswinter, the Drachenfels (2), two castles near Brühl (2), Cologne and Arnhem. The captions are in Dutch, some also in French. Among the interesting details that can be seen on these plates are the different ways of transportation, the ferries and two depictions (20 and 25) of very long rafts consisting of thousands of trunks and timber, bound together, with many rowers, together with their primitive housing, who led the rafts from Switzerland or Germany (The Black Forest) to the sawmills in the Netherlands. Good copy.- (Rebacked).
