Contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine. With engraved frontispiece, engraved printer's device with turtle on title, and 30 full-page engravings, each with 8 separate illustrations, depicting 240 scenes from the many stories. (6), 888 pp. First edition in Dutch of this collection of moral tales in the tradition of the Italian 'novella' by John Reynolds. In reaction to accusations of merely translating French and Italian folk tales, Reynolds emphasises in his preface the fact that he has written down all these stories from his own memory, after having heard them during his travels in Europe. All stories are higly dramatic, dealing with violent passions, terrible crimes, and consequent murder. Every tale is preceded by a summary. The translator, Johannes Grindal (1617-1696) studied at the Athenaeum Illustre at Amsterdam under Vossius and Barlaeus and later was an apothecary, medical practitioner and an active member of the Mennonite Church in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. According to Cornelis W. Schoneveld, the translation reads even better then the original, because Grindal had made many alterations and removed some of Reynolds's stylistic mannerisms. His original book The triumphs of Gods Revenge against the crying and execrable sinne of Murther had appeared in 1621-24. A second independent but by far inferior Dutch translation was published a year later in 1667 in Rotterdam, testifying of the immense popularity of such 'crime stories' in the Netherlands. Good copy.- (Sm. tear in p. 787 without loss of text).
