[REYGERSBERCH, Jan Janse].Dye Cronijcke van Zeelandt. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Antwerp, Weduwe van H. Peetersen, 1551. 4to. 17th century marbled calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt, richly gilt cover-edges, red mottled edges. Fine allegorical woodcut title with the coat of arms of the province of Zeeland, Charles V and Maximilian at the top, folding woodcut map of Zeeland, small woodcut portrait of Charles V., full-page woodcut coat of arms of Zeeland on verso of last leaf, and 6 mostly full-page woodcut coats of arms, of Maximilian, the province of Zeeland, and of the cities Middelburg, Veere, Zierikzee and Cortgene in text, numerous fine woodcut initials. (194) lvs. First edition of the first Chronicle of the Dutch Province of Zeeland, still a very important source for its early history. Jan Janse Reijgersberch from Cortgene, whose identity is revealed in the granted privilege, moved in 1532 to Veere when Cortgene was inundated, and he stayed there until his death in 1572. He was a protégé of Maximilian of Burgundy, and must have had easy access to the government files. The present first edition was already in 1831 by De Wind called very rare. Fine copy, with large armorial bookplate of Custis, a noble family of 's-Hertogenbosch.- (Binding sl. rubbed, spine sl. dam.).
