Original edition of a rare essay on the principles of the art of painting by the French Neoclassical painter Jean Restout (1692-1768), 'peintre ordinaire  du Roi Louis XV', edited and annotated by Arthur-Richard Rouxelin De Formigny de la Londe (1831-1897), member of the Société des Beaux-Arts de Caen who added also a list of Restout's 44 paintings (pp. 20-30), still present in the major museums of the world. Apart from 'peintre ordinaire' of King Louis XV, Restout was professor of drawing at the Academie Royal at Paris from 1730 onwards. He was the most important painter of a family of painters from Normandy. His son Jean-Bernard Restout (1732-1797) was also a well-known painter.
The edition of Restout's essay is an extract from the periodical 'Bulletin de la Societé des Beaux-Arts de Caen, part III, from the year 1863, and only 10 copies were printed on coloured paper.
