Paris, Nyon the Elder & Sons, Widow of Nyon, 1791-1800. 3 volumes. 8vo. 19th-century green half shagreen, gold-tooled spine, sides with crowned gilt initials 'C.L.' With 28 engraved plates and maps (21 folding and 7 full-page). XXXVI, 432; 464; [4], 378 pp.

Very rare French translation of the Nieuwe beschryving der walvisvangst (1791), greatly enlarged with notes and illustrations. It is one of the most important works on the history and contemporary practice of the Dutch whale- and herring-fishery in the Northern Seas and Greenland. It became very popular and is still of interest, not in the least for its fine illustrations showing whales, dolphins, hunting scenes, tools, native peoples, and maps of Greenland, Nova Zembla, Spitsbergen and J. Mayen Island.
The binding is decorated with the gilt initials of Comte Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat, godson of Napoleon.

Very nice set.
