With two printer's devices, head- and tail-pieces and musical notation. [252; 32; 72; 4] ll. With: (2) [PSALMS]. Psalmen Davids in Teutsche reimen gebracht, mit vorgehendem eines jeden psalmes inhalt, und lieblicher melodei, durch Ambrosium Lobwasser D. Sampt vielen anderen psalmen und geistlichen liedern. Bremen, Thomas de Villiers (colophon: for Johannes Wilius & Johannes Bentheim at Bremen), 1620. 12mo. With title in red and black, within woodcut architectural border, with musical notation. 634, (14) pp.- (3) [Additional psalms and hymns]. [No place, publisher, year). 16mo. 35, [1 blank] pp. Early 17th-century calf dos-à-dos binding, spines and sides richly gilt, fine ornamental borders within fillet frames, gilt edges. Magnificent dos-a-dos binding, containing an interesting collection of rare editions of Calvinist psalms and hymns, and reformed liturgical works in French and German, back to back, including: the Psalms in the translation of Clément Marot and Théodore de Bèze, a reformed calendar, intended to replace the `popish inventions', an early edition of the prayers for the liturgy, with one of the first calvinist catechisms, an early edition of the calvinist confession, and an additional index for use of the Geneva church, all in French. And at the other side: the German translation of the Psalms by Ambrosius Lobwasser, followed by other versions, hymns and religious songs by Luther, A. Resiner, J. Agricola a.o., with an additional part containing similar versions by J.J. Grynaeus, Luther, and a prayer by Th. Zwinger. Probably an unrecorded edition of the Psalm translation of Ambrosius Lobwasser (1515-1585), lawyer and professor at Königsberg. Modelled after the French translation by Marot and De Bèze, metrically so close to the original, that the same musical notation could be used, it remained for long the basis of all reformed songbooks in Germany until 1798. Ad binding: fine specimen of a dos à dos binding, a difficult and expensive way of binding. These bindings are mostly found on protestant liturgical (song)-books, and were especially popular in England. The presence of Calvinist works in French and German points to a huguenot provenance in the northern part of Europe (probably Germany). Two leaves misbound in German psalms; additional German psalms slightly browned. With manuscript owners names on fly-leaves and title (partly erased. Magnificent specimen of this curious way of binding.
