Portrait frontispiece of general Jackson by Edwin after Whaeler, 4 large folding maps of the battle of Talledega, the battle of Horseshoe Bend, an attack made by general Jackson on a division of the British army (1814), and of an attack made by the Britsh forces on the American lines in advance of Orleans (1815). (4), (III) - VIII, (9), 425 pp. Rare first edition of the famous biography of General Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) of the utmost importance for the history of the war against the Creek Indians and the defeat of the British at the battle of New Orleans. In the War of 1812 Jackson defeated the Creek Indians at Horseshoe Bend, a turn in the Tallapoosa River, near Dadeville, Alabama. The Creek Indians were led by chief William Weatherford, also called Red Eagle. In august 1813 Red Eagle attacked Fort Mims and killed about 500 whites. At the battle of the Horseshoe bend Jackson broke the power of Red Eagle and his nation. Red Eagle was pardoned by Jackson, who admired his courage, and Red Eagle lived in peace until his death. After his defeat of the Creek Indians it was the turn of the British. With a small and poorly equipped force Jackson defeated an army of 8.000 men. After this victory Jackson became a national hero. On the day of the battle, the 8th of January, Americans, especially in the South, are even today celebrating its anniversary, singing "Remember New Orleans I say, Where Jachsons show'd them yankee play, And beat them off and gain'd the day, And then we heard them people say Huzza For Gen'ral Jackson". In 1828, Andrew Jackson was elected as the seventh president of the United States. In 1832, he was reelected and he served his country until 1837. After his last term he retired to his ranch "The Hermitage" in Tennessee where he died 1845. Good copy with the signature of "Pleiddy, U.S. Navy" on reverse side of portrait.- (Some foxing throughout).
