First issue of the first edition of a comedy by the most famous French playwright after Molière

Finely bound in 19th century red morocco, spine ribbed and gilt in compartments with the title lettered in gold, triple gold line along the edges of both covers, gilt binding edges, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (by HARDY). (8), 1-72, 69-92 (= 96) pp.

Very rare first issue of the first edition of a comedy on the folies of love by the famous French playwright and poet Jean- François Regnard (1655-1709). The play, consisting of a prologue, three acts in verse and several poems, was first performed in Paris on the 15th of January 1704 and first published anonymously (our copy). The 'Approbation' is dated 27 February 1704; the 'Privilege dy Roy' is dated 1 February of the same year (registered Paris, 10 March 1704. In the same year a second issue of the  first edition appeared under the name of Dancourt.
Regnard was a prolific author of works in several genres of literature, and especially his comedies, following closely in the steps of Mollière, are  ranked amongst the finest after that master of French playwrights. Regnard and his comedies were highly admired by Boileau.

Very fine copy, lovely bound in a nineteenth-century red morocco bibliophile binding, with the bookplate of Leon Rattier.- (Without the frontispiece).
