Contemporary mottled calf with ribbed, gilt spine with morocco letterpice, gilt doule fillet border around both sides, edges of bookblock marbled. Identical engraved vignette on both titles, identical engraved headpiece in both parts. (8), 325, (1 blank); (2), 4, 255 pp.

L'Abbé Raynal (1713-1796), French historian who became especially famous for his 'Histoire des deux Indes'. The first edition of the present, also very succesful work on the history of the office of stadtholder from its origin to the time of publication, was published in The Hague, 1747. It was followed by a number of reprints in the following years. An English translation appeared in 1787.
