One of the best and most entertaining buccaneer travel accounts
RAVENEAU DE LUSSAN.Journal du Voyage fait a la Mer de Sud avec les flibustiers de l'Amerique. ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Jacques le Febure, 1705. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spine ribbed and gilt with red title-label. (10), 443, (1) pp. Very famous and entertaining work. "The author adopted the Buccaneering "profession" in order to obtain money to pay his creditors and to return to his fashionable life in Paris. According to his own account, he was a man of the highest principles and very devout, never allowing his crew to molest priests, nuns, or churches. After taking a Spanish town, he would attend Mass in the Church or Cathedral with his pirates before commencing to loot. In his work he tells of a love affair with a wealthy Spanish widow in one of his captured towns, and of his various adventures and ultimate safe arrival back in Paris" (Maggs). Although the text is somewhat tedious and disordered, interesting details of the countries visited by the author are described, as well as several goods and the habits of the local people. These detailed descriptions make the present work one of the best buccaneer travel accounts of its time. Good copy.- (Hinges weak; few stains).
