Baron Munchhausen's surprising travels
[RASPE, Rudol Erich]."Complete Original Edition" of the surprising Travels and Adventures of Baron Munchausen, in Russia, the Caspian Sea, Iceland, Turkey, Egypt, Gibraltar, up the Mediterranean, on the Atlantic Ocean, and through the centre of Mount Aetna, into the South Sea. Also, An Account of a Voyage into the Moon and Dog Star ... A Sequel, containing his Expedition into Africa... humbly dedicated to Mr. Bruce. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A New Edition. London, R.S. Kirby, 1819. 2 parts in 1 vol. 12mo. Modern calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with gilt fillet borders on sides, with red title-label, gilt inner fillets, g.e. preserved in marbled slip-case (WALLIS). With frontispiece-portrait of Baron Munchhausen, and 27 engraved plates, 8 folding, all nicely coloured by hand. XII, 179, (1) pp. Rare English edition of Baron Munchausen by Rudolf Erich Raspe (1737-1794), first published in Oxford in 1786. The preposterous stories rapidly grew, and with the "Sequel", added as a second volume in 1792 Raspe himself had nothing to do anymore. It was dedicated to and at the same time a satire on the famous Africa explorer, James Bruce of Kinnaird, whose extensive account of his travels had first been published in 1790. In the present edition the Munchausen proper occupies the first part, 96 pages, illustrated with a portrait, dated 1792, and 8 folding plates, and the rest of the book contains the "Sequel" with Munchausen's adventures in Africa, illustrated with 19 full-page engravings. The book is complete as published notwithstanding the promise on the title of 40 copperplates, which is counting the various scenes shown on the plates, and including the portrait. Fine copy.
