De nocte et nocturnis officiis, tam sacris, quam prophanis, lucubrationes historico-philologico-juridicae; emendatae & augmento illustratae uberiori, lectu jucundissimae & elegantiores his, quae paucos ante annos author anomynus in lucem emisit, quarum author idem. Bremen, J. Köhler, 1660. Woodcut title-vignette, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. (4), 448 pp. And: (3). WERNER, Johann Nicolaus. Corpusculum philologicum variis rerum & verborum observationibus refertum; cui addita est Oratio M. Johannis Weitzii De dilatione fugenda. Cum indice rerum & verborum. Arnstad, Caspar Freyschmid, 1662. Woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. (22), (2 blank), 265 (=264), (2), 265-298, (36) pp. Ad 1: First and only edition of a rare, early work on whigs by Konrad Tiburtius Rango (1639-1700). Rango is the first who has treated this subject extensively. He begins with a collection of citations of classical authors commenting upon artificial hair. In his own comments he is less critical than other German and European authors in the period in which the use of wigs is becoming fashionable. Rango was theologist and biologist and obtained various posts at the universities of Frankfurt and Wittenberg. He was also rector of the lyceum Grauen Kloster in Berlin (1663-1668) and became superintendant of the cathedral in Greifswald in 1689. The engraving facing the engraved title depicts a man looking through a telescope with the word "Historia" on its tube, pointed at a sphere in the sky incorporating a head with a wig and wigmaker's tools. The engraved title itself shows a corridor flanked by two obelisks with (left) the names of ancient civilisations 'Medi', 'Persae', 'Graeci' and 'Romani', and (right) with the Latin names of modern civilisations: 'Galli', 'Angli', 'Germani' and 'Sarmate'. Between the top of the obelisks, a banner with the title 'De Capillamentis libri duo'. This suggests that originally the work was planned to comprise two parts (one for the subject in antiquity, the other for the modern era), but eventually the complete text was fitted in a single volume. Ad 2: First edition of an interesting work on the night and nocturnal activities as sleep, etc. by Jakob Andreas Crusius (1636-1680), a lawyer who studied in Wittenberg, Leipzig and Helmstädt. Soon after its appearance the work was placed on the Index of prohibited books for its unorthodox treatment of the subject and its indecency. The book is an elaboration od Crusius's earlier work Disquisitio de nocte, ejusque Divisione & incommodis nocturnis: in capita divisa, ob varietatem rerum & historiarum non injurundam conscripta J. A. C. C. C. D. F. [d.i. Jakob Andreas Crusius]. Bremen, Berger, 1652 (83 pp.). Further editions were published in 1718 (The Hague), and 1735 (Venice). Ad 3: Rare first and only edition of this miscellaneous work on various philological subjects and problems. Some examples are: Religion during the Emperors of the Roman Empire, euphemisms regarding death, on metaphors, etc. Werner's preface is dated 15 March 1662 and his work is preceded by five laudatory poems by his colleagues: the rector and fellow teachers at the school at Arnstad, 20 km south of Erfurt in Thuringia. Added is an oration by the classical philologist Johannes Weitzius (1572-1642), held in Gotha on 23 April 1619 on the proverb 'Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today'. Good copy, title-page of the first work with ownership's entry 'Jo. Benedicti Carp ...', dated Leipzig, January 1664 on recto, and old owner's stamp 'A.B'. on verso, and with small bookplate of Clifford Coates on inside of frontcover.
