(Amsterdam, Janssonius), 1644. Oblong 4to. Later half mottled calf with gilt title on spine. (49) lvs.

Part from the very rare first edition of  Commelin's ''Begin ende Voortgang'', containing an interesting description of Guiana by Ralegh (Raleigh) and Keymis, based on their experiences during their explorations and expeditions in the years 1595-1596.
This 1644 (fourth Dutch) edition forms a part of the first volume of the original edition of Isaac Commelin's collection of voyages ''Begin en de voortgang van de Vereenigde Neederlandtsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie'' of 1644 (Tiele has never seen a copy), and is generally omitted in the later issues dated 1645 and 1646. The  account of the voyages to Guiana by Walter Raleigh and Laurence Keymis were first published in London, 1596 and reprinted by Hakluyt in 1598-1600. Raleigh gives an account of his second voyage (1595) and describes the Spanish city El Dorado, mentioning its Indian name Maoa, and comparing his experiences with earlier (Spanish) accounts, which seemed to confirm the marvellous tales about this city. Raleigh describes his experiences emphasising them as being eyewitness accounts, for he was accused of not actually having been in Guiana himself.
