Contemporary half red morocco, spine ribbed and compartments elaborately gilt with floral ornaments, green morocco title label. Lithographed mezzotint portrait of Sir Raffles, 4 engraved maps of which 3 folding, 6 uncoloured aquatint lithographed plates. XVI, 724 (last blank), 100 pp. First edition of the biography describing the life and works of Sir Thomas Raffles (1781-1826), written by his widow Lady Sophia Raffles (1786-1858). The book gives a summary of the highlights of his life during his governing periods in Java. Raffles was appointed Lieutenant Govenor of Java in 1811, when the island and its dependencies were occupied by Lord Minto. Under his scepter he extended the area of European control and he reorganised the Dutch colonial system. In 1816 he went back to England, but after a short stay he resumed his Eastern service in a situation of reduced and restricted authority, as lieutenant governor of the dilapidated, fever-ridden pepper port of Bengkulu on the west coast of Sumatra. The work is beautifully illustrated with 4 engraved maps depicting the harbour of Caloombyan, the route from Padang to Menangkabu, a sketch of the island of Singapore and a large folding map of the Indian Archipelago. 7 lithographs show a buste portrait of Raffles and views of Buitenzorg and other landscapes. Of special interest is the large folding view of Singapore Town & Harbour. Beautiful copy.
