A perennial favorite: an sucessful opéra comique translated into Dutch

Modern three-quarter red morocco, spine in compartments with title lettered in gold, marbled boards and endpapers. Half-page engraved frontispiece by A. Fokke after J.E. Grave with the caption 'De Hoefsmit. Xe tooneel', title with engraved vignette by and after Reinier Vinkeles, and six full-page engraved plates ( 3 by Therese Martinet, one by Duhamel, all after Marie Queverda, 2 dated 1768, resp. 1776), with French captions, apparently from a French edition. 62 (2 blank) pp. First edition of the translation into Dutch by Johannes Menkema Jr. of this popular 'Opéra comique' of the black smith by the playwright and librettist Antoine-François Quetant (1733-1823). The play was first published and performed with great success in 1761 in Paris with the title Le maréchal ferrant, with music by the famous composer (and chess player) François André Danacan Philidor (1726-1795). In 1762 the French text was already published and performed in the Amsterdam theatre. An earlier translation into Dutch by Jacques Toussaint Neyts (1727-1794) was published in Amsterdam in 1769, titled De paarde smit. Good uncut copy on large paper (195 x 125 mm).- (First and last page sl. soiled, versos of plates water stained).
