Treatise on leather gilding, from the library of the celebrated Parisian bookbinder Léon Gruel to whom the binding can be attributed
LA QUÉRIÈRE, Eustache de.Recherches sur le cuir doré, anciennement appelé or basané, et le description de plusieurs peintures appropriées a ce gendre de décor. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rouen, F. Baudry, 1830. 8vo. Contemporary half calf with gilt title on spine, marbled boards and endpapers. With folding engraved frontispiece designed and engraved by E.-H. Langlois. 23 pp. Very rare first and only edition of an account on leather gilding by Eustache de la Quérière (b. 1783), a well-known antiquary from Rouen and member of the Académie et de la Société d'Emulation in Rouen. The book has been in the possession of the celebrated Parisian bookbinder, bibliophile, collector and scholar Léon Gruel (1841-1923), to whom the binding of this booklet also can be attributed. The account also treats a lot of (antique) objects concerning this subject and various methods for treatment of leather, for instance the use of Guadamacil, a Spanish word, signifying painted leather, supposed to have its origin in the city of Ghadames, Sahara. The guadamaciles ever remained a speciality of Spain, Seville, Barcelona, Lerida, Ciudad-Real, and Valladolid bearing the palm after Cordova. Such works are characterized by elaborateness, splendour of colour and richness of detail ('The curious may consult the Recherches sur le Cuir doré by M. de la Queriere' (Betham-Edwards). Fine copy with bookplate of Léon Gruel pasted on inside of front cover; uncut; several annotations in pencil.
