The art of saying much with few words
PUTEANUS, Ericius.De laconismo syntagma. Adjuncti Thyrsi Philotesii, Stili & sermonis Aculei.- IDEM. Thyrsi Philotesii, sive Amor laconissans. Stili & sermonis Aculei. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Louvain, Gerardus Rivius, 1609. 12mo. Modern half parchment; marbled paper over boards. Printer's device on the title-pages and nice woodcut initials. 118, (2)(Privilege); 78, (10) pp. Both works, considered to be the most charming treatises by the virtuoso Belgian humanist and philologist Enricus Puteanus (1574-1646), are mostly found together, and are intensively reworked and expanded editions of these treatises which are originally published at Milan in 1604-1606. The first treatise is dedicated to Charles, duc de Croy et d'Aerschot, the second to Maxim. Plouvier, dated Louvain 31 Dec. 1608. The first is a reworked 're-issue' of his Laconismi patrocinium. Dialogus. Quo breviloquentia firmatur aut munitur (Milan 1606; Bibl. Belg., P.159), and - on p. 20-48 - his Laconismi encomium (Milan 1606; Bibl. Belg., P. 157). In fact it is a 'Praise of the art of saying much in only a few witty and elegant words' ('Laconismus'), with examples of a witty style with elegant 'points' ('Aculei').second treatise adds many examples cast in the same mould, mostly short statements or testimonies of friendship, as eloquently formulated as possible, originally sent to his friends during the years 1596 - 1603 when he lived in Milan and published there under the titles (1) Tesserarum philotesiarum libri duo: quorum prior ad Belgas: alter ad exteros (Milan 1604; Bibl. Belg., P.147) and (2) Tesserarum philotesiarum … ad insubres (Milan 1605; Bibl. Belg., 153): testimonies of friendship to resp. his Belgian (a.o. Juste van Raphelengen, Ph. Rubens and Jean Wowerius), his foreign and his Milanese friends, now re-published in a totally new order and completely reworked. The famous Dutch/Belgian philologist and humanist Enrycus Puteanus (Errijck de Putte) was born in Venlo, the Netherlands and died at Louvain, 17 Sept. 1646 after a very succesful career as successor on the chair of Justus Lipsius in Louvain (1606-1646). After having studied in Dordrecht and Cologne, he went to Louvain to follow the lectures by Justus Lipsius on ancient history. In 1597 he repaired to Italy and lived in intimacy with the learned men of that country, especially the Famous Cardinal Federigo Borromeo, through whom he was appointed professor of Latin at the Palatine School of Milan (1600-1606). Puteanus was an encyclopedist who dreamed of re-establishing in Belgium the splendid classical period and the cult of eloquence which he had derived from Italy. Very good copy of this interesting work.
