Third edition of the first publication, originally published in 1818, introducing the new method of A B teaching by the great reformer of Dutch primary education, Pieter Johannes Prinsen (1777-1854), director and teacher at the first Dutch Training College in Haarlem. After the pioneering work by the educational society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen", and after primary education was made obligatory at the beginning of the 19th century, it was Prinsen, who for almost half a century dominated Dutch school-education.
The present book fully explains and treats his A B teaching method, step for step, in 18 epistolary chapters, also containing the A B and reading exercises for the children themselves. Replacing the old spelling methods by a method  based on sounds Prinsen started with the vocals and compound vocals, only then proceeding to the consonants. Also all children in the class were to be teached as a body, and the little words to read had to be shouted by all after a question asked by the teacher, for instance the teacher would ask: "What instrument will the gardener use to fell a tree?", and the children would all shout: "Ax".
To bring his method to full use in practice it needed first a large letter-case in front of the classroom, then letterboards for the children. For the children Prinsen provided the "Eerste Oefeningen in het Lezen", from which soon the two first  steps, or tables, were to be separated as the "A B C Boek". The new method produced astounding results, and by 1830 it was introduced in all primary schools in the Netherlands.
