Leeuwarden, Claude Fontaine, 1630. Folio. Contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine. Very rare account of the famous siege of 's Hertogenbosch in North-Brabant by Prince Hendrik of Orange against the Spanish holding the city, in the summer of 1629. The text presents a detailed journal of all happenings and actions in the besieging army, including the final victory and the taking of the city, to which are added the articles of surrender for the civil government of 's Hertogenbosch as well as for the military governor, Baron Van Grobbendonck, and his Spanish army.
All is clearly illustrated on the added maps and plans, designed by the author, a military engineer, and engraved by Hondius, who published an edition in Dutch in the same year. Janssonius published an edition in German, also in 1630. Especially the seven detailed plans of the approaches at various quarters are of great interest. They were respectively conducted under the command of Prince Hendrik of Orange, Count Ernest Casimir of Nassau, Count Willem of Nassau, Baron Van Brederode, and Pinsen, the Governor of Rees. The last of these plans shows the camp of the Count of Solms and a.o. a large work of water-mills, the working of which is demonstrated on two insets.
The present work probably was meant as a counterpart to the popular journal by Simon Pelgrom, prior of a monastery at 's Hertogenbosch, relating the happenings within the besieged city, which had been published directly after the events, still in 1629. But unlike Pelgrom's work, which was several times republished, the present work, however very popular at the time, must have been read to pieces. That explains the rarity of this work because all editions are virtually unknown.
Fine copy, from the collection of Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1653-1716) with his signature on title.- (Tear in folding plate).
