Leipzig, Elias Fiebig, 1677. 4to. Contemporary vellum, red sprinkled edges, green ties. Woodcut on title of a hand with turned up thumb and one woodcut in text of a hand divided in alphabetic compartments. 216 pp.

Very rare and only edition of a curious work on superstition by the famous Johann Praetorius (= Hans Schultze 1630-1680). It treats the superstitious belief that the thumb or finger cut off of a hanged thief was an outstanding good luck charm. It furthermore tells of the different parts of the hand and the ascribed powers they have, of how to handle a divining rod etc.

Good copy.
