Important account of a fleet sent to India in 1690 to rescue the French interests
[POUCHOT DE CHANTASSIN, Claude Michel].Relation du voyage et retour des Indes Orientales pendant les années 1690. & 1691. Par un garde de la marine servant sur le bord de Monsieur Duquesne commandant de l'escadre. ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Widow of Jean-Baptiste Coignard; Brussels, George de Backer, 1692. 12mo. Contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine. Title printed in red & black with woodcut printer's device; woodcut head- and tail pieces. (8), 298, (6) pp. Second edition of a very rare travel account, published in the same year as the first edition in Paris, on the voyage to the East Indies (1690-91) under command of the French naval officer Abraham Duquesne-Guiton, the son of the famous protestant French naval officer Abraham Duquesne (1610-1688) who fought against Michiel de Ruyter in the latter's last and fatal sea-battle near Palermo. On 5 May 1689 the French King Louis XIV decided to send an expedition to the East Indies to secure the French interests. A fleet of six ships was dispatched under Admiral Abraham Duquesne-Guiton to rescue in the first place the Siam mission, which enterprise had met with disaster due to the political upheavals in Siam during 1688, and to pick up company goods stored in India. During this voyage the fleet visited The Capeverdian Islands, Madagascar, Pondichery, and the Island of Ceylon. After coasting southern India and attacking a few places the ships returned to France in 1691 via America (The islands Ascenion and Martinique) with a valuable cargo. The author describes in detail the natives, especially the Negroes, and the difficulties the encountered during the voyage, observations on the fauna, the battles with the English and the Dutch, etc. Apparently the first edition of this account was published in Paris in 1692 by the widow of Jean-Baptiste Coignard & J.B. Coignard fils in an 8vo edition (VIII, 332 pp). The name of the author is to be found in the Privilege at the end of the work. In 1696 a German translation appeared in Hamburg. In the same year another account of the same journey appeared in Brussels: Journal du voyage de Dequesne aux Indes Orientales, with an augmented edition in The Hague in 1721, edited by Robert Challes. Good copy.
