From the library of Willem I, King of the Netherlands
POISSONNIER-DESPERRIERES, Gabriel Adrien Marie.Vie politique et militaire, écrite par lui-même, et publiée de son vivant. ![]() ![]() Paris, C.J. Trouvé for the author, 1824. 8vo. Contemporary full-grained orange morocco, spine ribbed and richly gilt with gilt plumed helmets in the compartments and dark-brown title-label, with richly gilt and blind-stamped borders on sides and large richly gilt armorial supralibris of the Dutch King Willem I on both covers. With lithographed frontispiece-portrait of Louis Charles, the French Crownprince, by Constans after a drawing by Eugénie Lebrun. XII, 512 pp. First edition, luxuriously bound for the first King of the Netherlands, Willem I van Oranje Nassau, who reigned from 1815 to 1840. Gabriel Adrien Marie Poissonnier-Desperrières (1763-1852) was aide-de-champs of La Fayette in 1789, took part in the suppression of the revolt of the Swiss regiment at Nancy, and was present at Valmy. During the French Revolution he was sent to prison, but he was released after the 9. Thermidor. Pages 1-162 relate to this revolutionary period. Under Napoleon the author was twice put on non-active, in 1801 and in 1806. He retired from the army in 1811. After the "Restoration", Poissonnier-Desperrières rallied to the Bourbons and remained loyal during the "Hundred Days". So from page 209 onwards the memoirs deal mainly with the early days of the "Restoration", from about 1814 to 1816. For frontispiece the author chose the portrait of the young Dauphin, who was born at Versailles in 1785 and "lost" during the Revolution. Splendid copy in Dutch Royal binding.
