VERSCHEYDE NEDERDUYTSCHE GEDICHTEN, van P.C. Hooft, C. Huygens, C. Barlaeus, Tesselschade, Vondel, Vander Burgh, en anderen. Het Tweede deel, Verzameld door J.V.M. (= G. Brandt?).

Very rare collection of 17th century poetry, originally published in two separate parts. The first part, first published by Lodewyk Spillebout in 1652, is here in new edition of 1659, republished for Gerrit Willemsz Doornick as a single volume. It still has the original publisher's preface to the painter Geerardt Pierersz. van Syl, one of the editors of the volume. The second part, which was not republished, is dedicated by Spillebout to J. Six van Chandelier, also an editor of the first part. This part is in first edition of 1653, and our copy has the cancels, pages 55 and 223, replaced by the correct pages.
These collections of poetry are of special importance, because they represent a rare and rich source for all kinds of personal and historical information, as they contain, apart from love-songs and spiritual poetry, also a large number of poems dedicated to the marriages, funerals, books published, voyages made etc. of well-known contemporaries, as well as poetical comments on historical events. The present volumes contain contributions not only by the poets mentioned on titles, but also by D.A. Anslo, J. de Decker, L. Reael, J. Six van Chandelier, H.L. Spiegel, Jan Vos, J. Westerbaen, etc., and a lot of anonymous poetry as well.
Poems are devoted, for example, to the return after two years of Michel Le Blon from Sweden, to the bullet that killed Admiral Heemskerck at Gibraltar, to Huyghens "Orgel-Ghebruyck", to the history works of Pieter Bor, to the execution of the English King Charles Stuart, to the Twelve Years Truce with Spain, etc.

Good copy, with ink autograph on recto of last blank: W.C. Ackersdijck junior, 13 May 1780, and with manuscript song, set to the melody of Psalm CIII, on verso, written in a contemporary hand in brown ink.
Scheurleer, Liedboeken, 167-168; Scheepers I, 72 (ed. 1659 of the first part only).
