PLAUTUS.Comoediae. Acc. Commentarius Ex Variorum Notis & Observationibus, Quarum plurimae nunc primum eduntur. Ex recensione Ioh. Fred. Gronovius. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Leyden, Ex. off. Hackiana, 1664. Sm.8vo. 18th century half calf, spine gilt with red title-label, with gilt coat of arms of Amersfoort in centre on both sides, red painted edges. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece, signed P. Phil. (16), 1154, (52) pp. First edition of a scholarly text edition of Plautus comedies, with extensive comments by Johannes Fredericus Gronovius (1611-1671). Gronovius was born in Hamburg and studied at Altdorf and later, after he had met Hugo Grotius at Lubeck, he went to study at Leyden and Groningen. In 1634 he was invited by a sister of the Prince of Orange to come to The Hague as private tutor for her son, but after this fell through he became private tutor of the son of Michael Pauw at Amsterdam, where he met Vossius, Heinsius, Scriverius, and others. In 1641 he became Rector of the Illustre School at Deventer as successor of Martinus Schoockius who left for Groningen. In 1658 Gronovius became professor of Greek at Leyden as successor of Daniel Heinsius. His editions of the Classics were highly valued. The present copy was presented as a school prize at the Latin School in Amersfoort, probably a century after its first appearance. Fine copy of a rare Amersfoort prize-binding.
Dibdin II, p. 312; Spoelder, Prijsbanden, Amersfoort 4 (on vellum, 1717, 1754/1767, 1760/1776); cf. De Prijs is het bewijs 35-36 (2 vellum prize-bindings with other classical texts, published ca. 1750).
