Den vierden druck, gecorrigeert ende verbetert. Amsterdam, widow of Theunis Jacobsz. Lootsman (colophon: Amsterdam, Jacob & Casparus Lootsman), 1672. 4to. Contemporary vellum. Title in red & black with woodcut ornament, full-page engraved portrait of the author at an age of 75 in collation, woodcut end-pieces and initials. (12), 450, (10) pp.

Very rare corrected and enlarged fourth (actually the sixth and last) edition of the translation into Dutch of this medical manual by Pierre Pigray (Petrus Pigraeus) divided in 10 parts teaching of (general) surgery, tumours, wounds, ulcers, fractures of bones, dissections, various diseases of which the contagious ones are treated in the eight part, expelling of ghosts and all other unnatural matters and medicines. The work was translated by Pieter Rutgersz. van Nieustadt, who was the official surgeon of the city of Dordrecht, and edited by Hendrick Roonhuyse (ca. 1625-1672; NNBW V, col. 611), physician ('heel-meester') in Amsterdam.
The title mentions that this is the fourth Dutch edition, but actually it's the sixth and last. Earlier Dutch editions were published in 1623 (Dordrecht, Damis van Rybeeck), 1633 (Amsterdam, J.E. Cloppenburgh), 1648 (Amsterdam, for Theunis Jacobsz.), 1655 (Amsterdam, widow Theunis Jacobsz,; col: J. Theunisz., 1654), and 1661 (Amsterdam, J. Theunisz. Lootsman).
Pierre Pigray (ca. 1532-1613) studied surgery under the famous Ambroise Paré (1510-90), the father of French surgery, and for a while served in the army. With the help of Paré he became the physician of the Kings Karl IX, Heinrich II and IV. This work, which is a very good recapitulation of Parés works was originally published in Latin in Paris in 1612: Epitome praeceptorum medicinae chirurgicae cum ampla singulis morbis conventium remediorum expositione. The French edition the title Epitome des préceptes de medicine et de chirurgie avec ample déclaration des remèdes propres aux malades was first published in Lyon (and Rouen) in 1628, followed by many editions, a.o. Rouen 1638 and 1658; Lyon 1673, etc.).

Fair copy.- (Title frayed and lacking blank corner; loose in spine, binding soiled).
BMN I, p. 73; Hirsch IV, p. 569; Dijstelberge, Plague and print in The Netherlands, 1672/10; cf. Krivatsy 8998 (third Dutch edition: Amsterdam, Theunis Jacobsz, 1662); Nouv. biogr. gén. 40, p. 225; not in Garrison & Morton, nor Norman.
