Rare first Dutch edition of a work on the art of illumination
PICTORIUS, Johann Baptist.Den geheimen illumineer-kunst. Behelzende hoe men alle verwen kunstig bereiden en tot nut gebruyken zal. Als mede een zeer duydelyke onderrichting om allerhande menschen, beesten, viervoetige en kruipende gedierten, voogelen, visschen, boomen, velden, waters, gebouwen, allerhande vruchten, bloemen &c. &c. na het leven aftezetten en te schilderen. En alles wat tot die wetenschap nodig is, zeer nauwkeurig vertoont wert. Item: Alle metalen te vergulden, te doen smelten, tot poejer te maken, daar mede aant te leggen, en uit de pen te schryven. Alle, zo inlandsche als uitheemsche vernissen te maken en derzelver nuttig gebruik. Ivoor, been, veren en hout te verwen. Plyster werken aanteleggen. Hoorn week te maken, en figuren en beeldwerk daar van te drukken. Onderrichting om op alle metalen te etzen. Verheven Indiaans kabinet werk te maken en uit te graveren, &c. Eyndelyk: een zeer rare en tot nog toe onbekende kunstige verlakkunst, en zeer veel andere verborge wetenschappen.   Leyden, Wed. en zoon van Jan vander Deyster, 1747. 8vo. Contemporary wrappers. Engraved frontispiece. (6), 464, (24) pp. Very rare first Dutch translation of an by origine German work by Johann Baptist Pictorius about the art of illumination. In this, mainly technical, book, several techniques for painting and etching are extensively described, as well as how to prepare metal for writing. The work also discusses making varnishes and how to make plaster from ivory and bone. There are only 3 other recorded copies of this edition found in The Netherlands and 2 in The United States. Good copy, uncut.- (Spine worn).
