PICART, Bernard.Diverses modes dessinées d'après nature. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, printed for Bernard Picart, 1728. Suite of 12 engraved costume plates, including the title (ca. 125 x 72mm.) on 6 lvs. of 210 x 280mm Loose plates in modern cover. 12 costume plates, 6 of which are signed by G. Duchange, all after the designs by Bernard Picart. Very rare suite of 12 costume plates of Dutch and Frisian peasants and fishermen, printed on 6 leaves (2 on each lv.) as originally published. The suite is a selection from a suite of 30 numbered costume plates of peasants from all over Europe, issued in Paris by the widow of F. Chéreau in ca. 1720. Only the plates with Dutch and Frisian costumes were selected, provided with a Dutch caption, but without the numbers: - Paisanne du (Den) Helder / Boerin van de Helder (Colas nr. 12). - Paysanne de Frise / Frislantsche boerinne (Colas nr. 14). - Matelot de Frise / Frislantsche scheepvaerder (Colas nr. 9). - Petite fille de paisant de Frise / Kleijne frieslantsche boerinne (Colas nr. 15). - Paysanne Hollandoise / Hollantsche boerinne (Colas nr. 19). - Paäsan de Schevelingen / Schevelingse boer (Colas nr. 7). 20 of the 30 plates issued in ca. 1720, had already been published from 1702 till 1708 by G. Duchange in Paris: most of these plates were dated and with the 'excudit' of G. Duchange. Bernard Picart (Le Romain; 1673-1733) was a celebrated French artist who came to Holand in 1710 where he lived and worked in Amsterdam from 1711 till his death in 1733. He was a pupil of his father and he worked in Paris together with F. Chéreau. Very good impressions on uncut lvs.
Cf. Cohen-De Ricci, col. 136; cf. Rahir 583; Lipperheide 477 (only one copy known in the Kunstgewerbe Museum in Berlin); cf. Colas 2353.
