PHILIPPON, Adam.Curieuses recherches de plusieurs beaus morceaus d'ornemens antiques, et modernes, tant dans la Ville de Rome, ques autres villes et lieux d'Italie. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Croissant, Chez l'auteur, 1645. 4to. Contemporary vellum. Engraved title, letter-engraved dedication, letter-engraved leaf with privilege, 50 engraved plates (numbered 3-49, 10,12 and 2), engraved by Jean Le Pautre. 59 leaves. With: PAUTRE, Jean Le. feuillages ou Tritons marins antiques et modernes. Paris, P. Mariette, (1645?). Series of 6 leaves with engravings. Two beautiful series of engravings, of which a part is engraved by the famous French artist Jean Le Pautre. The first series are designed and published by Adam Philippon, architect, ingenieur, woodcutter, designer and etcher and also the learning master of Jean Le Pautre. It was at Philippon's studios where Le Pautre learned the art of designing, etching and engraving, and it was there that he made his first engravings. And this work is the result of that. Le Pautre engraved 26 of the first 50 plates, designed by Philippon. Those 50 engravings show vaultings, vases, ornamental frames, mascarons etc. The series of 6 engravings at the end of the work show 12 borders with ornamental foliage, mostly depicting mythical water-figures or Tritons. These 2 series are also series nr. 1 and nr. 7 in the complete works or Oeuvres d'architecture of Jean Le Pautre (Paris, 1751). Good copy.- (Right corner of first blank teared, some ms. pencil drawings, ms. notes on verso dedication, some waterpaint figures on verso plate 33, last leaf somewhat wrinkled).
Berlin Kat. 312 & 313.
