One of the few editions of Philes's poems (ca. 1300) describing all kinds of animals
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Utrecht, Petrus Muntendam for Willem Stouw, 1730. 4to. Later mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments with light brown morocco label, lettered in gold, sprinkled edges. Title printed in red and black, some nice head and tail pieces. (16), 347, (5) pp. Original and only edition by the famous Dutch philologist Johannes Cornelis Pauw (ca. 1680-1749), canon of the Utrecht Church of St. John of this poem on all kinds of animals. The poem was originally written in ca. 1300 in Greek by the Byzantine poet Philé or Philes (ca. 1275 - ca. 1340). The text is largely based on the De natura animalium (History of animals) by the Greek author Claudius Aelianus (2nd century) and was published for the first time in Venice in 1530, edited by the archbischop of Monembasie and dedicated to the emperor Michael Paléologue. The Latin translation by Gregorius Bersmannus was edited by Johannes Camerarius and printed in Leipzig in 1574. The original Greek text as well as this Latin translation are reprinted here without the many mistakes of the original editions on facing pages.Pauw dedicated his edition to Abraham Gronovius (1695-1775) who would be appointed librarian of the University Library at Leiden in the following year (1741). This dedication is printed on f. 2r-5v and is dated: Utrecht, 5 November 1729. Very good copy.- (Some very insignificant occasional soiling and browning).
