Leyden, Ex off. Plantiniana, 1598. Small 8vo. 19th century half red morocco, spine ribbed and gilt (CAPÉ). 191, (1 blank), 55, (1 blank), (16) pp.

First Dutch edition of this scholarly edition of Phaedrus's Fables  of Aesop, in fact the first Phaedrus-edition in the Netherlands. The edition by Pithou with the comments by Rittershusius had first been published at Altdorf in 1596. The book starts with 91 fables by Phaedrus, with an index at the end. On page 81 a half-title announces the comments by Ritterhusius, of which the last page is left blank, followed on page 165 by the half-title for the added Spicilegium by Schoppius, also with last page blank.
Also added are, with separate pagination, the Fabellae & Aenigmata Veterum Poetarum, with parallel text in Greek and Latin, containing Gabriae Fabulae, Hesiodi Apologus, Ignoti Epigramma, Apologi Horatiani, and Aenigmata, with at the end an Ad Lectorum. The last 16 unnumbered pages contain Joseph Castalioni's Aenigmata Symposii Poetae Veteris. Cum Scholiis, in Latin. The book is finely printed in several different types, Roman, Italics, and a small Greek type.

Fine copy.- (Sl. cut short).
