"the finest of all wrestling books and deservedly the most famous"
PETTER, Nicolaes.Klare onderrichtinge der voortreffelijcke worstel-konst, verhandelende hoemen in alle voorvallen van twist in handtgemeenschap, sich kan hoeden: en alle aengrepen, borst-stooten, vuyst-slagen &c. versetten. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge, 1674. 4to. 19th-century red morocco, gilt fillet borders along the edges, gold-tooled spine in compartments, inner dentelles, green silk pastedowns, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (GRUEL). With woodcut vignette on title-page and 71 full-page etched plates (ca. 17.5-19.5 x 14.5-16.5 cm) by Romeyn de Hooghe. [8], 16 pp. First edition of this well-known book on wrestling, containing also a method for an unarmed man attacked by a man armed with a knife to defend himself. The book is perhaps even more important by its illustrations by the famous Dutch artist Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) as by the text of Nicolaes Petter. Prof. Sydney Anglo characterizes the book as "historically speaking the most important treatise on unarmed combat ever printed ... the finest of all wrestling books and deservedly the most famous". The combination of Petter's lucid descriptions on p. 1-16, devoid of all jargon and De Hooghe's masterful depiction of pain and violence in the engravings, elevates the book to its position of solitary eminence. It is also unique in presenting an effective and complete unarmed combat system in a format from which it would be actually to learn. After the preface (f. 2r-4r) there is indeed a kind of advertisement "Aen de liefhebbers van de Worstel-konst" (To the lovers of the art of wrestling; f. 4v), in which those interested are recommended to take lessons in wrestling with the pupil of the late Petter, Robert Cors, who gives his lessons on payment at the house of Petter's widow on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam not far from the fencing-school. On p. 1-16 follow the very accurate descriptions of the 71 plates by Nicolaes Petter, explaining all the procedures, tricks, manoeuvres of wrestling. The 71 plates by Romeyn de Hooghe are divided into 13 sections. Each plate shows two men in wrestling position, wearing different costumes in each section. The 71 plates are numbered consecutively as well as per section: I: numb. 1-12; II: numb. 13-18 and 1-6; III: numb. 19-25 and 1-7; IV: numb. 26-29 and 1-4; V: numb. 30-34 and 1-5; VI: numb. 35-36 ad 1-2; VII: numb. 37-40 and 1-4; VIII: numb. 41-46 and 1-6; IX: numb. 47-50 and 1-4; X: numb. 51-54 and 1-4; XI: num. 55-64 and 1-4; XII: numb. 65-66 and 1-2; XIII: numb. 67-71 and 1-5. In the same year 1674 a German edition was published by Van Waesberge with the same plates under the title: Der künstliche Ringer ... Kürtze jedoch klare Unterweisung ... zu den fürtrefflichen Ringe-Kunst. A French edition appeared in 1712 with the title: L'Academie de l'admirable art de la lutte (Amsterdam 1712).
